Long School of Medicine

John Kouam

About me

I grew up in Cameroon and moved to the USA to Dallas-Fort-Worth about 10 years ago. My childhood experiences led me towards pursuing a health oriented major at Texas A&M University. I wasn't certain about where I fit in medicine so I became a phlebotomist in college to get hands-on experience and this strengthened my desire to become a doctor. I love to volunteer at our refugee clinic and translate in french for patients and I'm passionate about increasing minority representation in healthcare.

Hobbies/Interests

Soccer, tennis, painting, hiking, video games

Topics I feel comfortable talking about

Gap year, minorities in medicine, long distance relationships in med school

What I hope to gain from this experience

I'm excited to be a mentor and make this journey easier for some applicants who may have difficulty navigating the system or acquiring certain information. It's a blessing to be in a position to give back and make the process smoother for others.
