Program Overview
The Leadership Track is a year-long professional development experience designed to help residents and fellows lead meaningful change starting with themselves.
Through a blend of online learning, mentorship, and interactive sessions, participants build practical leadership skills while completing a longitudinal project focused on growth, improvement, and impact.

Understanding Yourself and Others
Goals:
In this module, residents will also begin exploring emotional intelligence, and the impact that it can have on leaders.
(Optional) They will learn to understand their personality traits and how these traits might influence how they interact with or are perceived by others.
Objectives:
At the end of the module, the residents will:
1. Understand the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership.
2. Implement ways to improve any weaknesses in their emotional intelligence.
3. (Optional) Gain insight into their personality traits using common personality evaluations.
Ethical Consideration in Leadership
Goals:
Residents will learn about the importance of ethics in leadership, gain insight into their own values, and explore ethical dilemmas.
Objectives:
At the end of the module, residents will be able to:
- Identify your personal values
- Recognize moral conflicts and identify ways to approach them
Developing Vision and Mission Statements
Goals:
Residents will learn how to develop vision, mission, and value statements and recognize how this leads to the development of a strategic plan.
Residents will also learn about institutional culture, and how that can affect the implementation of strategic plans.
Objectives:
At the end of the module, residents will:
- Identify the differences between vision, mission, and values statements
- Become familiar with their institution's and department's vision and mission statements.
- Develop a personal vision and mission statement.
- Become familiar with how strategic plans are developed, and why.
Essential Communication Skills - Basics and Psychological Safety
Goal:
Residents will learn ways to improve their communication skills, so that they may become more effective leaders.
Objectives:
At the end of the module, residents will be able to:
- recognize techniques to enhance interpersonal communication
- communicate appropriately based on what you know about your audience
Applied Communication Skills I - Difficult Conversations and Feedback
Goal:
Residents will learn ways to improve their communication skills, so that they may become more effective leaders, including techniques for guiding difficult conversations and modules for giving feedback.
Objectives:
At the end of the module, residents will be able to:
- identify steps to prepare you to navigate through a difficult conversation
- understand the procedure for effective feedback
Applied Communication Skills II - Negotiation
Goal:
Residents will learn negotiation techniques that they will be able to use in the future to secure resources, influence policy, and address patient concerns.
Objectives:
At the end of the module, residents will be able to:
- Prepare for a negotiation using a Negotiation Planning Document
- Identify techniques commonly used in negotiations.
Leading Teams
Goal:
Residents will develop skills in leading teams, situational monitoring, communication and mutual support.
Objectives:
At the end of the module, residents will be able to:
- Identify factors that influence the success or failure of a team.
- Discuss ways that leaders/team members can make a team more successful.
Leading Meetings and Giving Presentations
Goals:
Residents will understand the uses of meetings (vs other forms of communication) and will learn how to organize and run an efficient meeting.
Objectives:
At the end of the module, residents will be able to:
- Describe when meetings are useful compared to other forms of communication
- Develop an effective agenda
Change Management
Goal: Residents will develop skills to navigate change effectively and guide teams through transitions.
Objectives: At the end of this module, residents will be able to:
- Identify the tools to manage a team through change effectively
- Recognize leadership actions that help people embrace change
- Identify best practices to minimize barriers to change
Quality Improvement
Goal: Residents will learn about strategies for process improvement.
Objectives: At the end of the module, residents will:
- Understand when and how to use Root Cause Analysis models
- Develop a plan for a quality improvement project.
Financial Management
Goal: Residents will explore basic budgeting principles, reimbursement models, and value-based care.
Objectives: At the end of the module, residents will:
- Recognize sources of hospital and department funding
- Recognize the importance of accurate documentation and coding in medical finance
- Recognize different ways in which physician compensation can be structured
