Externships

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) externship at the UT San Antonio School of Dentistry consists of a minimum one-week rotation on the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service. The externship is primarily designed for dental students who are seriously considering pursuing a career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

During the rotation, externs work closely with OMS residents and gain exposure to a variety of clinical and academic experiences. This includes participation in OMS clinics, operating room procedures, academic sessions and on-call duties at University Hospital alongside OMS residents.

The UT San Antonio OMS externship provides dental students an opportunity to:

• Develop a comprehensive understanding of the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
• Gain insight into the structure and expectations of OMS training at UT San Antonio, including the academic and clinical responsibilities of OMS residents and the roles of faculty and supporting staff within the OMS team.
• Observe the broad spectrum of surgical services and clinical cases managed within the OMS program.
• Gain hands-on outpatient surgical experience, including patient assessment, minor trauma procedures and dentoalveolar surgery. Participation in major surgical procedures is generally limited to serving as a first or second assistant.

Externship Schedules

To provide dental students with an equitable opportunity to participate, the UT San Antonio Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery externship is offered year-round.

The preferred time to complete an externship is during the summer following the third year of dental school, when students have typically developed a foundational level of clinical experience. Exceptional students may also be considered for an externship during the summer following their second year.

Applications are accepted annually from July 1 through June 30.

UT San Antonio School of Dentistry does not provide malpractice insurance coverage for externs. Students who are accepted into the program must provide proof of malpractice insurance prior to beginning their externship.

Acceptance of an externship position represents a significant commitment. Students who need to withdraw are expected to provide adequate notice to the UT San Antonio Program Director. Timely notification is essential to allow another qualified applicant the opportunity to participate in the externship.

Apply

Dental students interested in participating in the OMS externship must complete the required background check, submit the online application and provide all requested supporting documentation. Applications must be submitted at least three months prior to the requested externship date to allow the department sufficient time to review and process the application.

All application requirements and supporting documents must be completed and submitted for an application to be considered. Incomplete applications may not be reviewed or considered until all required materials have been received.
