Graduate Medical Education



Woodson "Scott" Jones, M.D. is the Vice Dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) in the Long School of Medicine (LSOM).  Dr. Jones is board certified in Pediatrics and a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics.  Prior to joining the LSOM, Dr. Jones served as the Dean, DIO and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC).

At SAUSHEC, Dr. Jones oversaw 33 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited training programs and more than 20 graduate-level allied health-training programs. Service outside of GME included the Board of the Directors of the San Antonio Military Health System, the San Antonio Hospital System CEO forum, and the Federal Healthcare Consortium.  He is active in the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Resident Affairs (GRA) serving on the Steering Committee and as an invited faculty member for the GME Leadership Certificate Program.  Dr. Jones held academic appointments as Professor, Doctor of Science Programs, Baylor University Graduate Programs; Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics, UT Health San Antonio; and Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Uniformed Services University (USU), Bethesda, MD.  Previous positions include Associate Dean of GME, SAUSHEC; Pediatric Residency Program Director, SAUSHEC; Chief of Pediatrics, Craig Joint Theater Hospital, Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan; Pediatric Clerkship Director, USU.  Dr. Jones earned a BA in Biology from Baylor University in 1986, and completed his medical degree at University of Texas Medical Branch in 1990 graduating Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed Pediatric Residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center in 1993.

The Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) provides oversight for over 50 ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs and nearly 30 non-ACGME fellowship programs, with more than 700 residents who work and learn in San Antonio and its surrounding areas. The GME Office works cooperatively with the GME Committee, program directors, program coordinators, faculty, trainees, and with our health system partners to maintain the quality of the educational experience and appropriate clinical learning environment of every resident and fellow.
