Global Health Distinction Program
Goals
The Global Health Distinction (GHD) Program of the School of Nursing (SON) aims to acknowledge undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate engagement in interprofessional global health-related activities while maintaining high academic standards. The goals of the GHD program are to promote culturally sensitive care, enhance interprofessional team skills, and broaden students’ vision of health and innovation by meeting the health needs of our local populations and advancing health promotion to communities across the globe.
Objectives
- Construct a vision for improving health outcomes and advancing healthcare innovation through global health-related activities.
- Develop skills related to providing culturally sensitive health care for individuals from varied backgrounds.
- Demonstrate effective interprofessional team skills.
- Appraise methods for promoting health and well-being across the globe.
Requirements for Achieving the Distinction
- Achieve a final cumulative GPA of 3.25 at graduation.
- Participate in a mentoring relationship with UT Health San Antonio faculty member(s)
- Present at the meeting of the Committee on International Programs, and at another mentor-approved conference/meeting.
- Document at least 150 hours of global health activities while enrolled in their program:
- Complete a zero-credit hour interprofessional global health course elective (15 hours) or one of the approved online global health courses.
- Participate actively in global health and study abroad activities to include an international experience.
- Please note: The GHD faculty mentor will review and approve all logged GHD hours. Hours completed for the GHD may not be used to fulfill requirements for any other Distinction Program. Graduate students may count GHD hours as clinical hours if the hours meet their program’s clinical requirements and are approved by the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies.
Awarding of Global Health Distinction
The CIP will review and approve the completion of all requirements. The following documents are required:
- The verification of at least 150 hours of completed global health activities (Appendix III: Activity Log signed by their GHD faculty mentor).
- Unofficial transcript displaying successful completion of the interprofessional global health course elective or online global health course and a GPA of 3.25 or higher.
- Copies of all scholarly materials produced by the student (i.e., abstracts, posters, manuscripts).
- Proof of presentations: CIP meeting and another mentor-approved conference/meeting.
Implementation of the Global Health Distinction Program
The SON Committee on International Programs will implement, manage, and recommend the awarding of the GHD.
