Gail E. Tomlinson, MD, PhD

Dr. Tomlinson is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology. Her clinical interests are in guiding individuals and families who may be at risk for cancer because of genetic predisposition and leads a multi-site program working with individuals and families throughout South Texas. Her research background is in the genetics and biology of liver tumors in children. She has recently initiated an investigation of predisposing factors underlying the increased incidence of leukemia in children of Hispanic background in South Texas and maintains a growing registry and biobank for children and adolescents with cancer. She has served on multiple national and state committees focusing on advancing research, education, and advocacy in childhood cancer and has published over 180 scientific papers. She currently is a member of the National Cancer Institute’s Board of Scientific Counselors.

Dr. Assanasen, is a professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. He holds the Children’s Cancer Research Institute Distinguished Chair in Pediatric Oncology. Before joining UT Health San Antonio, Dr. Assanasen was faculty and principle investigator at Nemours Children’s Clinic in Pensacola, Florida, where he was significantly involved in the pediatric-based Community Clinical Oncology Program. He founded and continues to lead the Mays Cancer Center’s and Greehey global outreach program in education and research in Southeast Asia, collaborating with pediatric oncology centers in Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, as well as academic institutions in Bangkok, Thailand and Singapore.

Assanasen

Ted Cieslak, MD, MPH, FAAP, FIDSA
Adjunct Associate Professor of Epidemiology

A Pediatrician and Infectious Disease Physician, Dr. Ted Cieslak recently retired from his position as Executive Director of Health Security for UNMC, as well as Medical Director of UNMC’s Quarantine Unit and Medical Co-Director of its Biocontainment Unit. He holds the rank of Associate Professor of Epidemiology within the University’s College of Public Health and will continue to teach as an adjunct faculty member. Dr. Cieslak received his BS in Chemistry and his MD degree from The Ohio State University. He went on to complete a Residency in Pediatrics at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and Fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He also received an MPH degree from the University of North Carolina.

Deena Sutter, MD, is the founding physician of South Texas Pediatric Infectious Disease, following her retirement from the USAF. She most recently served as Pediatric Infectious Disease Consultant to the USAF Surgeon General and Chief, Division of Pediatric Infectious Disease at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). Since 2007, Dr. Sutter has been a leader in developing infectious disease curriculum for both military and civilian trainees. She has a special interest in quality improvement, patient safety and antimicrobial stewardship

Chief of Pediatric Pulmonology at Brooke Army Medical Center, Major Welsh serves as core faculty to the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC): Pediatrics Residency. He also holds an appointment as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Welsh received his BS in Clinical Laboratory Science from Saint Louis University. He received his MD degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He completed pediatrics residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI. Dr. Welsh completed his fellow ship in pediatric pulmonology at Boston Children’s Hospital in Boston, MA. Dr. Welsh is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and member in good standing of the American Thoracic Society (ATS). He is board-certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Pulmonology. His research interests include pediatric interstitial lung disease and cystic fibrosis. He is currently serving as the Chair of the Regional Health Command- Central: Institutional Review Board. He is also a voting member of the Department of Defense: Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Committee. Dr. Welsh is the Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center at Brooke Army Medical Center. Dr. Welsh has a passion for teaching and mentoring medical students and residents. He has received the resident teaching award, fellow teaching award, and faculty teaching award during his training and time as teaching faculty. He has developed multiple electronic curricula for pediatric residents, most recently the pediatric pulmonary rotation for SAUSHEC Pediatric residents. He serves as the Coordinator for Leadership Development for the Pediatrics Department at Brooke Army Medical Center.
