Professional Development Awards & Competitions
There are multiple professional development opportunities for students at the Mikiten Research Symposium. Review the information below to select which competition(s) you would like to participate in. Prizes are available for each competition.
Abstract Competition
We invite students to share their research by submitting an abstract for the competition. Each abstract will be judged by a faculty member and will be judged for originality, quality, and clarity. Each abstract should be 250-500 words summarizing your research. Winners and prizes will be announced on the day of the Mikiten Research Symposium. Only one submission per student. Only first authors may submit an abstract. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Abstract submission deadline is January 30, 2026.
Poster Competition

Students are invited to participate in the Mikiten Research Symposium Poster Competition, an opportunity to showcase their research and scholarly work. The poster competition provides a supportive and engaging environment for students to share their ideas, gain presentation experience, and receive valuable feedback from peers and judges. The Mikiten Poster Competition is open to current GSBS graduate students.
Please upload a file of your abstract using this template. Please include name, mentor, and program. Review the linked abstract competition rubric and poster competition rubric for guidance on evaluation criteria.
3MT Competition

The 3MT Competition is an opportunity for graduate students to highlight their research delivered in 3 minutes using a single static PowerPoint slide. It's a challenge that can help students hone their research skills and communication abilities. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Review the linked 3MT competition rubric for guidance on evaluation criteria. 3MT Competition deadline is Wednesday, January 30. Slides must be email to vegam@uthscsa.edu by Wednesday, February 4.
