Discovering Genetics: My Experience at the NIH Summer Genetic Institute

Kelly McGlothen-Bell, PhD, RN, a posdoctoral fellow in Dr. Lisa Cleveland's lab, was accepted to the Summer Genetics Institute (SGI), an intensive research training program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. Sponsored by the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), the SGI provides participants with a foundation in molecular genetics appropriate for use in research and clinical practice.

Congratulations to Katherine Serafine, PhD!

Former T32 trainee, Dr. Katherine Serafine, was selected to be the next Biomedical Research Awareness Day (BRAD) Fellow through the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) and the Americans for Medical Progress (AMP). As a BRAD Fellow, Dr. Serafine will help advocate for the use of animals in biomedical research and raise public awareness about careers in neuropsychopharmacology! Dr. Serafine is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Congratulations to Kelly McGlothen-Bell, PhD!

Kelly McGlothen-Bell PhD, RN, IBCLC, a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Lisa Cleveland's lab, has been awarded a small grant from the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN), for her application entitled, Maternal Perceptions of Feeding Behaviors in Infants with Prenatal Opioid Exposure. She will receive $5000 from the 2019 Small Grants Award Program in October at the NANN National Meeting in Savanah, GA.

Dr. Lisa Celveland at UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing has received $17.5 million to expand its work of training and providing naloxone statewied to save lives threatened by opioid overdose.

Congratulations to Dr. T. Lee Gilman, post-doctoral fellow in the Daws lab, for receiving the inaugural Dennis L. Murphy Memorial Travel Award for young investigators. Congratulations to Vanessa Minervini!

Vanessa's application was chosen to be the ASPET nomination to represent the division as the Young Investigator Corresponding Member for the Executive Committee of the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR).

IUPHAR was expected to make a decision from among all the nominations they’ve received from their member societies. Instead, however, IUPHAR decided to initiate/create the Young Investigator Subcommittee because of the high quality of nominees from each of their member societies.

The subcomittee is composed of Young Investigators from around the world. the mission statement of IUPHAR is to represent the interests of pharmacologists around the world by promoting collaboration, public awareness, and educational pursuits. THe Young Investigator Subcomittee will help to address the problems and opportunities facing young scientists by representing the perspectives and interests of emerging researchers in pharmacology.

Congratulations to T32 Trainee Kelly McGlothen-Bell!

Kelly was accepted to Frontiers in Addiction Research and Pregnancy (FrARP) program. FrARP is a NIH-sponsored hands-on research education program hosted in partnership by Morehouse School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, and Emory University. The purpose of this training course is to address the current medical challenges resulting from substance abuse during pregnancy and encourage research-based strategies to address addiction mechanisms to improve treatment options!

Congratulations to T32 Trainee Kristen Rosen!

Kristen is the PI on a newly funded pilot grant, funded through SALSI titled “MindfullyAdherent: A Tailored mHealth Intervention to Optimize Medication Adherence for Opioid Use Disorder”

We aim to establish proof of concept of a behavioral smartphone intervention to prevent buprenorphine non-adherence among individuals receiving treatment for an opioid use disorder. We will package tailored text messages with a commercially available mindfulness training app to create the MindfullyAdherent intervention.

Congratulations to T32 Trainee TJ Moon!

TJ’s poster, titled “Tears, Cheers, or Peers? The role of drinking motives and social support in the recovery of DWI offenders,” was the postdoctoral fellow poster contest winner at the IIMS/CTSA 9th Annual Frontiers of Translational Science Research Day! Each winner receives a certificate and a $500 travel award towards any domestic, education travel.

Lee Gilman, Ph.D., in the laboratory of Lynette C. Daws, Ph.D., is a recipient of a 2017 NARSAD Young Investigator Award from the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation. Dr. Gilman’s project, titled “Probing the contribution of PMAT function to depressive behaviors and poor antidepressant efficacy”, will commence in January 2018.
