School of Dentistry offers hand skills course to international dentists
This July the School of Dentistry began offering a new continuing education hand skills course to international dentists seeking future admission to an International Dentist Education Program. The four-day, 32 hour workshop is designed to assist international dentists prepare for the bench assessment required when applying for admission into advanced standing programs. UT Health San Antonio continues to improve in the annual Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the ShanghaiRanking. In the category of Dentistry & Oral Sciences, based at UT Health San Antonio in the School of Dentistry, the university is ranked 34th worldwide. 2021 Faculty Research & Master Clinician Awards
Two distinguished faculty members received their award plaques, recognizing them as awardees of the 2021 School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Master Clinician Awards. The School of Dentistry first announced the award winners in April as the awardees were speakers during the 39th Annual Research and Clinical Symposium. Faculty Research Award Anibal Diogenes, DDS, MS, PhD, was selected for the 2021 Faculty Research Award for his long-running standard of research excellence.

On April 28, Dean Peter M. Loomer, BSc, DDS, PhD, MRCD(C), FACD, hosted a virtual Conversation with the Dean event from his home in San Antonio. Accompanying him were Amanda Wilson, a rising third-year dental student, and Amanda Liccione, director of development for the School of Dentistry.
Class of 2021 dental students, hygienists achieve 100% licensing pass rate
The School of Dentistry celebrated its Class of 2021 as 100% of all dental and dental hygiene seniors passed the Western Regional Examining Board (WREB) this April. Traditionally, the WREB, a high-stakes licensure exam, requires the students to demonstrate clinical competency with live patients. However, at the onset of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, Texas dental schools advocated for simulated exams.

Dental Student featured in “Real Jobs” video series
Joi Walls, a rising fourth-year dental student, was recently featured by InTheKnow.com for the series titled “Real Jobs” that profiles young adults aspiring to enter various careers. The five-minute video follows Joi through her day caring for patients and creating content for her YouTube channel. Joi speaks about her inspiration for entering the profession of dentistry and her motivation for sharing her journey that she hopes will “usher in the next generation of young, Black dentists,” writes Katie Mather from InTheKnow. Senior dental student learned more than dentistry on pediatric rotation
Larissa Sanchez is a senior dental student with her sights set on graduation this May. Over the past four years, she and her classmates have been exposed to a number of community-based training experiences meant to enhance their skills for providing dental care and managing a diverse patient population. One such rotation is conducted at Ricardo Salinas Clinic, an affiliated training site, that provides students with valuable clinical training working with children.
Collaboration is king at UT Dentistry
Within a dental practice as large and diverse as the UT Health San Antonio’s School of Dentistry, it’s easy for a new patient to feel a little nervous before their first appointment. This was certainly the case for Jeffrey Almquist, a patient who sought treatment at the school. Mr. Almquist’s hesitation was quickly quelled, though, after meeting Jorge Silva, a senior dental student who would provide his care. “I felt secure and liked him from the start,” says Mr. Almquist of Jorge.

Call for nominations: 2021 School of Dentistry Faculty Research & Master Clinician Awards
The School of Dentistry is currently accepting nominations for the 2021 Faculty Research and Master Clinician Awards to recognize outstanding faculty performance in both categories. The Faculty Research Award is aimed at acknowledging the outstanding, lifetime scientific achievements made by a dental faculty member, while the Master Clinician Award will honor a full-time dental faculty member who provides direct patient care activities.
Meet the Faculty: Dr. Tiffany Tavares
The School of Dentistry welcomes back to campus Tiffany Tavares, DDS, DMSc, a new clinical assistant professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry’s Oral Medicine Clinic. Dr. Tavares earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and her Doctor of Medical Sciences degree from Harvard School of Dental Medicine. She also completed an oral medicine residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a teaching hospital affiliated with the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, in 2018. Dr.

Noemi C. Gonzales retires after 37 years of service
After serving the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry for 37 years, Noemi C. Gonzales, RDA, hung up her lanyard and retired on Monday, August 31, 2020. Noemi first arrived on campus August 18, 1983 to work as a dental assistant in the senior student clinic, which she did for two years. She moved on to work in what was known as the Simulated Private Practice (SPP) clinic, the site for a three-week senior student rotation meant to simulate the flow of a private practice office. She worked in the SPP for fifteen years under the leadership of Beatrice R.
Meet the Faculty: Dr. Andrea Bordoy
Since 2018, Andrea Bordoy, DDS, has acquainted herself rather well with the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry as she completed both an observership and an internship within the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Effective September 1, 2020, Dr. Bordoy steps into a new role and joins the department’s faculty as an assistant professor. Dr. Bordoy grew up in Venezuela’s capital city of Caracas and earned her dental degree in 2009 at Santa María University.

Delta Dental foundation awards $30K grant for pediatric dental care
The Delta Dental Community Care Foundation has awarded a $30,000 grant to support the care efforts of the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry’s high risk pediatric dental patients. Since 2011, the Delta Dental Insurance Company’s philanthropic arm, The Delta Dental Community Care Foundation, has partnered with local communities to increase access to care, support dental education, and fund research that advances oral health.
