Cancer Patient Dental Care Restorative

Many forms of treatment for head and neck cancers affect a patient’s mouth, teeth, and salivary glands. Restoration of the dentition and supporting structures following treatment are often required to restore function, form and aesthetics.

Oral complications related to cancer treatment include:

  • Damage to the bone and tissues around the teeth resulting from radiation exposure.
  • Extraction of decayed teeth or teeth with periodontal disease before radiation treatment to minimize the risk of osteoradionecrosis of the bone.
  • Surgical removal of teeth and portions of the jaws or face due to intraoral cancers.

As each cancer treatment varies with side effects, a consultation with your dentist is needed to discuss the best dental care plan for you. Your oral health is an important part of your overall health; UT Dentistry is here to be a part of your cancer care team.
