Sovna Shivani Mishra, BDS, MDS: An expert in orofacial pain joins UT Dentistry’s Oral Medicine Clinic

We are pleased to welcome Sovna Shivani Mishra, BDS, MDS, to the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry faculty. As a clinical assistant professor specializing in orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine, Mishra brings nearly a decade of experience in patient care, teaching, and research. Her expertise strengthens the academic training provided to students and enhances the services offered at UT Dentistry.
“Dr. Mishra brings great expertise in orofacial pain. Her addition helps us increase our community services and expand our students' learning opportunities. Beginning in the academic year 2025-2026, our students will have the unique opportunity to include a new orofacial pain rotation to see patients with complex orofacial pain conditions first-hand,” said David Ojeda Diaz, DDS, clinical associate professor of oral medicine and diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine.
Professional background and expertise
Mishra's qualifications include a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the SRM Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai, India, and a Master of Dental Surgery with a focus on oral medicine and radiology from Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences. She furthered her specialization with a fellowship in forensic odontology from SDM College of Dental Sciences and Hospital and recently completed her residency in orofacial pain at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
Before joining UT Health San Antonio, Mishra served as a teaching assistant at Tufts University, where she lectured on oral radiology, orofacial pain and behavioral pain assessment. Her previous role as an assistant professor in oral medicine and radiology at Government Dental College in Raipur, India, involved managing a high patient volume, conducting impactful research on public health issues and participating in forensic investigations for medico-legal cases.
Mishra's clinical expertise encompasses a variety of challenging conditions, such as temporomandibular joint disorders, facial pain and neuropathic pain. Her commitment to a patient-centered approach ensures that each patient receives personalized care, integrating the latest research with practical, evidence-based treatment strategies aimed at improving quality-of-life and treatment outcomes.
