Meet orofacial pain expert, Sovna Shivani Mishra, BDS, MDS, joining UT Dentistry’s Oral Medicine Clinic

Patients with chronic orofacial pain can now find expert care at the UT Dentistry Oral Medicine Clinic. Sovna Shivani Mishra, BDS, MDS, recently joined the Oral Medicine clinical team, bringing advanced training and specialization in diagnosing and treating a wide range of issues, from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders to facial pain, neuropathic pain, and other orofacial conditions that can be challenging to treat.
Dr. Mishra provides patient-centered care, combining the latest research with a decade of hands-on experience to develop personalized treatment plans that improve patients' comfort and quality of life. Her arrival expands access to specialized care for patients experiencing complex pain conditions affecting the mouth, jaw and face.
In discussing her approach to patient care, Dr. Mishra emphasized, “I prioritize patient education and take the time to truly listen. Once patients understand what’s happening with their health, half the battle is already won. They can expect a comprehensive examination, clear explanations and a care plan that makes sense to them.”
Professional background and expertise
Dr. Mishra completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology and Master of Dental Surgery, focusing on oral medicine and radiology at the Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences. She furthered her specialization with a fellowship in forensic odontology from SDM College of Dental Sciences and Hospital. She completed her residency in orofacial pain at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
Before joining UT Health San Antonio, Dr. Mishra taught at Tufts University, lecturing on oral radiology, orofacial pain and behavioral pain assessment. She previously served as an assistant professor in oral medicine and radiology at Government Dental College in India, managing a high patient volume, conducting impactful research on public health issues and participating in forensic investigations for medico-legal cases.
She is also a member of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain and continues to build on her research in sleep bruxism and pain management therapies.
