The University of Texas School of Public Health San Antonio dean Vasan S. Ramachandran, MD has been selected as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate. Clarivate’s 2023 list of Highly Cited Researchers includes influential researchers at universities, research institutes and commercial organizations around the world who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their fields of research. Ramachandran was selected in Cross-field, with influences in cardiology and clinical medicine.

The selection process, managed by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), involves a multi-dimensional evaluation strategy that considers various inter-related factors. The annual list is curated by the ISI team, with each chosen researcher having authored multiple Highly Cited Papers ranking in the top 1% by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the Web of Science over the past decade. While citation activity is a primary indicator, the selection process incorporates qualitative analysis and expert judgment to refine the preliminary list. Highly Cited Researchers represent an elite 1 in 1,000 among the global population of scientists and social scientists.

Among Ramachandran's research highlights are serving as principal investigator in the Framingham Heart Study and the Risk Underlying Rural Area Longitudinal (RURAL) Study, which is housed at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.

Bar Veinstein, President of Academia & Government at Clarivate said: “We celebrate the Highly Cited Researchers whose contributions transform our world by helping to make it healthier, more sustainable and more secure. Recognition of Highly Cited Researchers not only validates research excellence but also enhances reputation, fosters collaboration, and informs resource allocation, acting as a beacon for academic institutions and commercial organizations.”
