The University of Texas at San Antonio Awarded Funding for a Project to Build Capacity for Patient-Centered HPV Cancer Prevention Research
We are pleased to announce that the University of Texas at San Antonio (UT San Antonio) has been approved for a funding award through the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award Program, an initiative of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The funds will support a project aimed at advancing future research in cancer prevention related to human papillomavirus (HPV) in Texas.
Erika Thompson, PhD, Associate Professor in the Kate Marmion School of Public Health, will co-lead the two-year project with Stacey Griner, PhD, from the University of North Texas Health Science Center.
Human papillomavirus causes six types of cancer that are largely preventable through HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening. In partnership with the Texas HPV Coalition and key stakeholders, the project will build capacity in patient-centered clinical comparative effectiveness research (CER) to support HPV-related cancer prevention in the state.
“This funding award will enable us to help prepare Texas stakeholders for future patient-centered CER and engage them to prioritize areas of focus for this research in Texas. We are excited to move this project forward with stakeholders and the Texas HPV Coalition.,” said Thompson.
The Building Capacity to Engage in Patient-Centered Comparative Effectiveness Research to Prevent HPV-Related Cancers in Texas is part of a portfolio of projects funded by PCORI to help develop a community of patients, caregivers, clinicians and other stakeholders who are better equipped to engage as partners in all phases of patient-centered comparative CER and to disseminate results of PCORI-funded studies. Through its Engagement Award Program, PCORI is creating an expansive network of individuals, communities and organizations who can leverage their lived experience and expertise to influence research to be more patient-centered, relevant and useful.
PCORI is a nonprofit organization with a mission to fund research that will provide patients, their caregivers, and clinicians with the evidence-based information that is needed to make better-informed health care decisions.
