Marvin A. González-Quiroz, MD, PhD, Featured on Science & Medicine Podcast to Discuss New Study on Heat-Related Kidney Disease in Laborers

Marvin A. González-Quiroz, MD, PhD, faculty in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the Kate Marmion School of Public Health, was recently featured on the Science & Medicine podcast from Texas Public Health. González-Quiroz is investigating a deadly phenomenon first observed during his time as a medical student in Nicaragua. Young laborers were succumbing to chronic kidney disease without classic risk factors like diabetes, sparking a career dedicated to understanding the causes of this condition, known as Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Origin. Now leading a major ten-year cohort study in Nicaragua and collaborating internationally, he focuses on how environmental and occupational factors contribute to the illness affecting tens of thousands of workers globally.  González-Quiroz launching a pilot study this summer in San Antonio, looking at how heat stress and other factors impact the kidneys.
