The Saint Susie Charitable Foundation Scholarship in Memory of Dr. Fernando A. Guerra
This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Fernando Guerra to support incoming students who are residents of Bexar County.  Dr. Fernando A. Guerra was a pediatrician and served as the director of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) from 1987 to 2010. As a public health leader, he challenged traditional routines and inspired changes in many throughout his lifetime. During his twenty-three year tenure with Metro Health, Dr. Guerra was a walking example of healthcare excellence in the community and nationwide. Respected by many, he tirelessly managed Metro Health through seasons of change and growth, personally attended to his private practice patients and led the charge to support local agencies. Employees fondly reflect upon his strong commitment to accountability and the importance of staff professionalism to gain community trust. "He was a man who was dedicated to his patients and to the citizens of Bexar County. An overall huge influence on our community!" Dr. Guerra’s legacy of public health excellence continues to live on at Metro Health.
