The physician's practice of UT Health San Antonio's internationally recognized multidisciplinary TAVR team was the first in South Texas to offer transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) as an alternative to open heart surgery.

The Heart Valve Center at UT Health Physicians is proud to be the first in the South Texas region to offer transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for the treatment of critical aortic stenosis as an alternative to open heart surgery.

Led by the physicians who coauthored the 2012 ACCF/AATS/SCAI/STS Expert Consensus Document on Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, our team is comprised of the physician's practice of UT Health San Antonio's cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, non-invasive imaging physicians, neurologists and gerontologists who collaborate to plan the best approach on heart valve replacement for each patient.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is performed in our state-of-the-art hybrid catheterization suite at University Hospital by our highly trained cardiac team. TAVR is an alternative to open heart surgery which allows our experts to perform life-saving aortic valve replacements on patients who are too ill to receive the traditional surgical replacement.

This integrated consultation occurs during a single, coordinated visit that allows us to provide a complete report of the results and our recommendations for care.

The benefits of TAVR in those patients who qualify include:

  • Fewer days in the ICU and shorter hospital stays
  • Earlier return to normal activities
  • Less blood loss than conventional surgical valve replacement
