UT Health San Antonio has been helping families grow for over 25 years. Our board-certified reproductive endocrinologists and infertility specialists offer comprehensive reproductive services including intrauterine insemination.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is frequently recommended as an initial infertility treatment, often in combination with ovarian stimulation.

IUI Process

A fresh or frozen sperm sample is obtained and placed into the uterine cavity above the cervix.

If a fresh sample will be used from the male partner, it is collected after ejaculation into a special cup provided by the clinic. The sample is analyzed for a total motile sperm count.

The sperm sample is then placed inside the uterine cavity of the recipient in a procedure similar to a pap smear. A small flexible catheter (a tube approximately the size of a piece of spaghetti) is placed through the cervix and into the uterus. The washed sperm sample is then slowly injected into the uterus.

This procedure may cause cramping in some patients, who may be asked to rest for 15-30 minutes after the procedure. Occasionally, there may be spotting for the next 1-2 days. No antibiotics are recommended. Intercourse is permitted the evening of the procedure.
