Physicians at UT Health San Antonio treat all types of pediatric and adult cardiomyopathy and are the experts concerning hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Our skilled physicians have extensive training in assessing, diagnosing and planning the best course of treatment for each patient’s individual heart condition. They are dedicated to offering patients and their family education, guidance, and care for managing their HCM over their lifetime.

We also provide consultations for other physicians on how to properly care for patients with HCM during non-cardiac surgery and pregnancy.

Some recommendations regarding the optimal therapy to relieve or reduce HCM symptoms include:

  • Medicine to correct irregular heart rhythm and/or blood thinners to reduce the risk of clots
  • Traditional or less-invasive heart surgery to repair damaged areas of the heart
  • Pacemaker or defibrillator implantation to regulate heartbeat
  • Alcohol septal ablation- a heart catheterization procedure in which an alcohol solution is injected directly into a small branch of the coronary (heart) arteries. This causes the area of overgrown heart muscle to reduce in size.
