Treating Essential Tremor with Focused Ultrasound: A Patient's Guide

FUS

Understanding Essential Tremor (ET)

Essential tremor (ET) is a widespread neurological disorder characterized by involuntary shaking. Unlike Parkinson's disease, ET is more common, affecting around 10 million people in the United States. The condition typically begins with subtle tremors, often on one side of the body, and may worsen with emotional stress or purposeful movements.

What is Focused Ultrasound?

Focused Ultrasound is an innovative, incisionless treatment designed for ET patients who have not found relief through medication. This procedure uses sound waves, guided by MRI, to target and treat a specific area in the brain known as the Vim of the thalamus, which is responsible for tremors. The sound waves create a small ablation, or burn, in the brain tissue, which helps reduce tremors.

Benefits of Focused Ultrasound

·         No Incisions: The treatment does not require surgical cuts, minimizing the risk of infection.

·         Quick Recovery: Patients can often resume normal activities within days, as the procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis.

·         Effective Results: Clinical studies have shown significant and sustained improvement in tremor severity, with effects lasting up to five years for the first hand treated and at least six months for the second hand.

Is Focused Ultrasound Right for You?

It’s essential to discuss all medical conditions with your physician to determine if Focused Ultrasound is suitable for you. Patients will need a CT scan and must ensure any metallic implants are MRI-compatible. The treatment requires a cleanly shaven head, and patients remain awake, communicating with the treatment team throughout the procedure.

Focused Ultrasound offers a promising treatment option for essential tremor, providing significant and sustained relief with minimal risks. If you or a loved one is struggling with ET, consult with your physician to explore if this treatment is right for you.

UT Health San Antonio will be the first in San Antonio to introduce Focused Ultrasound (FUS) as part of our neurosurgical care and specialty practices. For updates on our upcoming Focused Ultrasound (FUS) services or to find out if FUS is right for you, please complete this questionnaire, and a member of our team will reach out to you with more information.
