The struggle with long COVID
COVID took the world by storm three years ago. Many Americans contracted the illness but have, thankfully, gotten better. But what about those who haven’t? Long COVID is the ongoing conditions of COVID that can have a wide range of symptoms that last, weeks, months, or even years. Because of their ongoing symptoms, Americans are struggling to go back to work and carry on with their lives. Although, long COVID is now being considered as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act, many struggle to be approved for disability insurance. Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez, MD, professor, and chair in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, finds some cases’ denial to be “mind blowing”. Gutierrez established UT Health San Antonio's long COVID practice in 2020 to help those struggling with their ongoing symptoms. She is continuing to help her patients get their lives back by helping with their disability applications.
