Rapid Response: Infusion Room team's heroic efforts earn Gold Shield Award

Dr. Monte Shaheen, Amy Cantu, Debra Hedgepeth, Paige Cockerham and Katie Pollock, demonstrated exemplary teamwork in a high-pressure situation, earning them the 2023-2024 Team Gold Shield Award. Their nomination stems from a critical moment when a patient began experiencing a severe anaphylactic reaction to chemotherapy. The nurses in the infusion room acted swiftly. Amy Cantu, the patient's primary nurse, immediately contacted Dr. Shaheen, the provider on call, who responded within a minute.

The entire team quickly mobilized to administer the necessary emergency medications, effectively managing the life-threatening situation. Their communication, quick thinking, and coordination were essential in stabilizing the patient. EMS was called and arrived in under five minutes. The patient was successfully stabilized and transferred to the appropriate care facility without further complications.

This event highlights the critical importance of teamwork and rapid decision-making in medical emergencies. The infusion room team’s ability to remain calm and collaborate effectively during such a serious situation saved the patient's life. Their remarkable actions illustrate the core values of UT Health San Antonio, where patient safety and care are paramount. This Gold Shield Award recognizes the infusion team’s outstanding dedication and their ability to work together seamlessly under pressure, ensuring the best outcomes for their patients.
