Dozens attend Deep Brain Stimulation education seminar
Nearly one million people in the U.S. are living with Parkinson's disease and nearly 90,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with Parkinson’s each year.
This was evident on July 8, when dozens attended an educational seminar at UT Health San Antonio to learn more about Deep Brain Stimulation, a surgical procedure that uses implanted electrodes in specific areas of the brain to treat neurological conditions.
Renowned experts Alex Papanastassiou, MD and Okeanis Vaou, MD discussed the risks and benefits with patients, families and caretakers. They also offered overviews of their work and explained how DBS can alleviate Parkinson’s disease symptoms not treated well by medications and leads to improved quality of life for many patients.
The seminar was followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.
