Carolina Solis-Herrera, MD, named founding director of the Center for Excellence in Diabetes

Carolina Solis-Herrera, M.D., has been named founding director of the Center for Excellence in Diabetes, a new initiative at UT Health San Antonio. The center will focus on advancing the clinical care of type 2 diabetes through innovation, collaboration and research.
The center is designed to be a hub for clinicians across disciplines to engage in cutting-edge clinical trials and develop forward-looking treatment strategies. It has already received significant philanthropic and community support.
Solis-Herrera is an associate professor of medicine, chief of the Division of Endocrinology, and medical director of diabetes and endocrinology care programs. She joined the UT Health San Antonio faculty in 2017 as an assistant professor.
Her work focuses on developing novel therapies and improving public health outcomes related to diabetes and metabolic disorders. She has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and is a dedicated mentor and educator. She is also recognized for her commitment to community outreach and expanding access to care.
Her recent honors include the 2024 UT Health San Antonio Presidential Clinical Excellence Award, recognition as one of “America’s Top Doctors” in 2023, and selection by the Bexar County Medical Society as one of its Extraordinary Women in Medicine. In 2022, she received the City of San Antonio’s Hispanic Heritage Month Proclamation Award from Mayor Ron Nirenberg.
In 2021, she was named “San Antonio’s Best Female Doctor” and received both the UT System Rising Star Award in Clinical Research and the UT Health San Antonio Women in Medicine honor. She is also a Voelcker Scholar and recipient of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Clinical Scientist Development Award.
The Center for Excellence in Diabetes is expected to serve as a collaborative resource for advancing diabetes care in South Texas and beyond.
