NIDCR Ranks School of Dentistry 12th in U.S. for FY18

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) released its rank listing of funding to U.S. dental institutions for FY 2018. The UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry ranked 12th, jumping 8 spots from number 20 in FY 2017. The overall FY 2018 funding amount was documented at $3,805,147, eclipsing the previous year’s funding by over a million dollars. Dr. Brij Singh, Associate Dean of Research, remarked that “Our goal was to be in the top 15 dental schools by 2020; we are really proud of our faculty and leadership.

Endodontics Receives $5.1M in New Grant Funding

Over 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain and still, an all too common treatment is opioid medication. Fortunately, opioid addiction has a been spotlighted and researchers are racing to discover alternative treatments and therapies for pain managment. Drs. Pilot Project Program Awardees

A new funding opportunity in the School of Dentistry, created and sponsored by the Office of the Dental Dean, was announced in July of 2019. Its purpose is to provide funding for faculty to generate pilot data that will be used for submitting future grant proposals. Members of the research community evaluated and ranked 10 competitive submissions, of which, four were funded. Summer Student Research Program

This summer, 19 participating students under the guidance of 16 faculty mentors, worked on their respective summer research projects. In addition to diligently conducting their work during break, each student prepared a short presentation for their fellow participants to wrap their summer session on June 26th.


2019 IADR: Dr. Diogenes Receives High Honor & Students Present Research

The International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held their annual meeting and exhibition on June 19 – 22, 2019 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. School of Dentistry’s research faculty and students traveled to present their research, attend the distinguished lecture series, and network with the international dental research community.

2019 Senior Awards

On Monday, May 13, 2019, The School of Dentistry held their annual Senior Convocation Ceremony at the La Quinta Inn & Suites medical center location. Breakfast was served and coffee was poured in preparation for the recognition of a long list of well-deserving and outstanding students.


46th Annual OKU Mu Nu Chapter Convocation

Held at the Petroleum Club of San Antonio on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, the Mu Nu Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) celebrated their 46th annual convocation. Three categories of membership in this prestigious dental honor society include: alumni, faculty, and honorary.


The 2019 AACMFS Annual Meeting Held in San Antonio

The American Academy of CranioMaxillofacial Surgeons (AACMFS) held its annual meeting in San Antonio on May 9 – 10, 2019. AACMFS members from around the nation assembled for presentations on the latest clinical and research findings, as well as discussions on innovative craniomaxillofacial surgery recommendations.

37th Annual Dental Science Symposium

The UT Health San Antonio dental community assembled on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 for the 37th Annual Dental Science Symposium. This yearly event showcases dental research in basic science, public health, clinical science, and education.


Dr. Kenneth Hargreaves Awarded $6 Million Department of Defense Grant

Ken Hargreaves, Professor and Chair in the Department of Endodontics, recently received a $6 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to develop a new class of non-opioid, non-addictive analgesics. This class of drugs is being developed for treating combat causality burns that often occurs due to improvised explosive devices (IEDs). In addition, about 2 million burn injuries occur yearly in the U.S. civilian population, with ~15% requiring hospitalization.


Dr. Bennett T. Amaechi Presented with 2019 Presidential Award for Sustained Excellence in Teaching

Bennett T. Amaechi, B.D.S., M.Sc, Ph.D., MFDSRCPS (Glasg), FADI, a Professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry, was presented with a Presidential Award for Sustained Excellence in Teaching on March 7, 2019. Dr. Amaechi joined the School of Dentistry faculty in November of 2001 as the Director of Cariology, a title he continues to hold 18 years later. In addition, he directs two undergraduate patient care courses and assists in three preclinical laboratory courses in both operative dentistry and prosthodontics.
