The Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is one of six regional oral and maxillofacial (OMS) societies in the United States. Maybe worse is the unexpectedly sharp pain when biting down onto something hard, like a stray popcorn kernel. What does that zing in your teeth mean, and what is your mouth telling you? The sensation of tooth discomfort or, worst-case scenario, acute pain is caused by more than one mechanism.

Giving back: Alumnus Dr. Ray Scott facilitates generous gift to the School of Dentistry

Ray Scott, DDS, UT Health San Antonio Class of 1983 alumnus, recently presented a generous gift of nearly $110,000 to the School of Dentistry on behalf of the American Dental Partners Foundation Inc., for which he is the president. The foundation was originally established for the sole purpose of supporting dental students in their dental education.

40th Annual School of Dentistry Research and Clinical Symposium

Since 1983, the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry Research and Clinical Symposium has provided a scientific program and forum to achieve a balance of current and updated clinical, basic science, case studies and evidence-based research.

School of Dentistry students and faculty attend ADEA’s annual conference

In March, the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) held its 2022 Annual Session & Exhibition in Philadelphia. The conference theme was “Lifting as We Rise,” which focused on bringing dental, allied dental and advanced dental educators and students together for four days of world-class educational training and an exhibit hall filled with dental education’s leading partners. The School of Dentistry had a strong presence at this year’s event with several students and faculty in attendance.

38th Annual James P. Hollers Memorial Lecture

In December, the School of Dentistry hosted the 38th annual James P. Hollers Memorial Lecture. This program honors James P. Hollers, a dentist and longtime San Antonio civic leader who chaired the San Antonio Medical Foundation for 20 years. He was the driving force in not only establishing the School of Dentistry but the foundation of the UT Health San Antonio. His determination and leadership provided guidance necessary for the state legislature to allocate funds to establish the institution.

Delta Dental supports care of the underserved

The School of Dentistry’s Department of Developmental Dentistry has been awarded a generous grant of $50,000 by Delta Dental’s Community Care Foundation to support patient care activities of the Ricardo Salinas Pediatric Dental Clinic and UT Health Laredo Dental Clinic. The Ricardo Salinas Pediatric Dental Clinic is a distinctive collaboration between the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, Children’s Shelter of San Antonio, Texas Cavaliers, and the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry’s Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry Program.

Rebekah Sculley completes leadership excellence program

2021 Faculty Promotions

The School of Dentistry wishes to congratulate Ravikumar Anthony, BDS, MS, MDS, and Rebekah Sculley, RDH, MS, for their successful applications for promotion. Their promotions were approved by the UT System Board of Regents to be effective September 1, 2021. Giving Back to Help Others Succeed

Dr. Uzoukwu and Dr. Miller, class of 2021, returned after graduation to share their time and knowledge as instructors in the annual Learning Enhancement for Achievement in Dentistry (LEAD) program which prepares incoming first-year and rising dental students for the year ahead by conducting an intensive three-week summer boot camp. 2021 Faculty Research & Master Clinician Awards

Two distinguished faculty members received their award plaques, recognizing them as awardees of the 2021 School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Master Clinician Awards.  The School of Dentistry first announced the award winners in April as the awardees were speakers during the 39th Annual Research and Clinical Symposium. Faculty Research Award Anibal Diogenes, DDS, MS, PhD, was selected for the 2021 Faculty Research Award for his long-running standard of research excellence.

Senior dental student learned more than dentistry on pediatric rotation

Larissa Sanchez is a senior dental student with her sights set on graduation this May. Over the past four years, she and her classmates have been exposed to a number of community-based training experiences meant to enhance their skills for providing dental care and managing a diverse patient population. One such rotation is conducted at Ricardo Salinas Clinic, an affiliated training site, that provides students with valuable clinical training working with children.

Dental hygiene students take first place in 2021 TDHA video challenge

The 2021 Texas Dental Hygienists’ Association’s (TDHA) Student Conference took place on Saturday, February 27th. Keeping with tradition, a video challenges were issued for students to create content with this year’s theme: Lighting the Way. As defenders of the 2020 winner’s title, School of Dentistry TDHA student members got to work.
