38th Annual School of Dentistry Research and Clinical Symposium

The students of UT Health San Antonio have an opportunity to engage in basic and translational research with more than 1,000 leading scientists and clinicians preparing them to be leaders in the health care and bioscience industry. At the 38th Annual School of Dentistry Research and Clinical Symposium, held on February 19, 2020, dental students and faculty showcased their work in the arenas of basic science, public health, clinical science, and education.

School of Dentistry Awardees of 2020 Presidential

UT Health San Antonio President William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, announced the 2020 Presidential Award winners on January 17, 2020. Among those honorees are two well deserving members from the School of Dentistry, who will be honored at a special awards dinner with a plaque and a cash award. Edward F. Alumna featured for participation in national HPV study

Risé Martin, D.D.S., class of 1985, was featured on KSAT 12 News for her involvement in a human papillomavirus (HPV) study headed by the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN). David L. Cochran, D.D.S., Ph.D., professor and chair of the department of periodontics, is the PBRN's director of the southwest region. Dental Hygiene and DDS Students Team Up for Community Service

Toyota Field hosted the 2019 Autism Speaks Walk in San Antonio to raise awareness and fundraise for research and support services for individuals diagnosed with autism. The UT Health San Antonio Special Care Dental Association and the San Antonio Dental Hygiene Association joined forces to host a booth at the event. The Special Care Dental Association (SCDA) supplied dental goodie bags that included a tooth brush, toothpaste, and oral health information in English and Spanish. Also, SCDA managed the booth setup.

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of Rosanne Fohn, public relations representative in the Office of Marketing, Communications & Media, the School of Dentistry has been all over the news this week. Dean Peter M. Loomer and Kelli Jimerson, DS3, were interviewed by KSAT 12 News due to the new educational standards announced by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The new guidelines will make all U.S. dental schools update their programs to be inclusive of patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Click the link to watch the clip.

Summer Student Research Program

This summer, 19 participating students under the guidance of 16 faculty mentors, worked on their respective summer research projects. In addition to diligently conducting their work during break, each student prepared a short presentation for their fellow participants to wrap their summer session on June 26th.


2019 IADR: Dr. Diogenes Receives High Honor & Students Present Research

The International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held their annual meeting and exhibition on June 19 – 22, 2019 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. School of Dentistry’s research faculty and students traveled to present their research, attend the distinguished lecture series, and network with the international dental research community.


Dental Care in Guatemala

According to The World Factbook, a site managed by the Central Intelligence Agency, over 50% of the Guatemalan population live below the national poverty line, with about 23% experiencing extreme poverty. With so many families struggling to meet their basic needs, oral healthcare is far from a priority and tooth decay is a massive problem throughout the country. Thanks to the efforts of the Open Wide Foundation, hope and health is now a possibility.

2019 Senior Awards

On Monday, May 13, 2019, The School of Dentistry held their annual Senior Convocation Ceremony at the La Quinta Inn & Suites medical center location. Breakfast was served and coffee was poured in preparation for the recognition of a long list of well-deserving and outstanding students.


46th Annual OKU Mu Nu Chapter Convocation

Held at the Petroleum Club of San Antonio on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, the Mu Nu Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) celebrated their 46th annual convocation. Three categories of membership in this prestigious dental honor society include: alumni, faculty, and honorary.


The 2019 AACMFS Annual Meeting Held in San Antonio

The American Academy of CranioMaxillofacial Surgeons (AACMFS) held its annual meeting in San Antonio on May 9 – 10, 2019. AACMFS members from around the nation assembled for presentations on the latest clinical and research findings, as well as discussions on innovative craniomaxillofacial surgery recommendations.
