Interprofessional STEM Scholars Program Teaches 4th/5th Graders About Diabetes, Cancer and Alzheimer's
A Community Outreach Approach The STEM Scholars Program, a new interprofessional community outreach program at UT Health San Antonio provides a platform for dental, graduate, health professions, medical and nursing students to interact and collaboratively design and present health-related topics at local K-12 schools. Dental Hygiene Students Teach Oral Health to Heroes & Villians
UT Health San Antonio Dental Hygiene student members of the San Antonio Dental Hygiene Association provided oral hygiene instruction and handed out goodies to super heroes, witches, unicorns, and so many other fantastical characters at the Any Baby Can Halloween party on October 22, 2019. Dental Student Receives National Dental Research Award
Tian Meng, a fourth-year dental student who is also part of the International Dentist Education Program (IDEP) at the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry, is one of four students nationally recognized for outstanding oral and poster presentations in the category of basic science research at the 2019 Hinman Student Research Symposium held this November in Memphis, Tennessee. The San Antonio Chapter of the American Association for Dental Research invited Julie T. Marchesan, D.D.S., Ph.D., as guest speaker for their 2019 Fall Dinner Lecture held on October 16, 2019. Dr. Marchesan is assistant professor at the Adams School of Dentistry’s Department of Periodontology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. With an extensive training in oral health sciences, Dr. Marchesan’s research focus is primarily on the role of innate immune receptors in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of Rosanne Fohn, public relations representative in the Office of Marketing, Communications & Media, the School of Dentistry has been all over the news this week. Dean Peter M. Loomer and Kelli Jimerson, DS3, were interviewed by KSAT 12 News due to the new educational standards announced by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. AGDC Wins 2019 Spirit Week Selfie Challenge
The gauntlet was thrown and the Advanced General Dentistry Clinic gladly accepted the challenge. With 31 shares on Facebook, AGDC residents, faculty, and staff won the 2019 Spirit Week Selfie Challenge! Lupita Gomez, Academic Programs Coordinator for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program, shared that everyone in the clinic had a great time preparing for this year's challenge.

Dental Faculty Sweep 2019 Faculty Senate Awards
The UTHSA Faculty Senate held a meeting on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at which they presented awards to Dr. Adriana Segura and Dr. Suman Challa, both School of Dentistry leaders. Dr. Segura was presented with the 2019 Administration Leadership Award, due to her outstanding management through the past few years. In her presentation speech, Dr. Stefanie Seitz, Assistant Dean of Students in the School of Dentistry, spoke on how Dr. Segura took on the new position of Associate Dean for Academics, Faculty and Student Affairs in 2017.
2019 Japanese Exchange Program, U.S.A. Visit
This August, the School of Dentistry welcomed 10 Japanese dental students and 1 dental faculty for a week-long visit observing our dental program and enjoying the central Texas sights. For the past 24 years, dental students from Asahi University and their sister institution, Meikai University, have traveled to San Antonio to observe our senior dental students in clinic and experience Texas’ hospitality.

Summer Student Research Program
This summer, 19 participating students under the guidance of 16 faculty mentors, worked on their respective summer research projects. In addition to diligently conducting their work during break, each student prepared a short presentation for their fellow participants to wrap their summer session on June 26th.
Faculty Advisors Meet & Greet - 2019
On Wednesday, August 7th, the School of Dentistry Faculty hosted the Class of 2023 for the annual Faculty Advisors Meet & Greet. Each first year dental student was paired and had dinner with their faculty advisor.
Dental School can be overwhelming from time to time, so these faculty members commit to being available to their students in order to guide them through both the highs and lows of their academic journey ahead.
2019 Welcome Social
On Monday, July 29, 2019 the School of Dentistry hosted a Welcome Social for the Dental Hygiene Classes of 2020, 2021, and the DDS Class of 2023. Held annually, the social is an opportunity for the dental and dental hygiene students to interact socially with one another, meet school administration, and reflect on the year ahead.
2019 IADR: Dr. Diogenes Receives High Honor & Students Present Research
The International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held their annual meeting and exhibition on June 19 – 22, 2019 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. School of Dentistry’s research faculty and students traveled to present their research, attend the distinguished lecture series, and network with the international dental research community.
