Edward Ellis III, DDS, MS, honored with the Robert V. Walker Distinguished Service Award
Edward Ellis III, DDS, MS, was honored with the Robert V. Walker Distinguished Service Award, the highest recognition for those in the oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty.
The award was presented in September during the Opening Ceremony of the 107th American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, the nation’s largest gathering of oral and maxillofacial surgeons, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field.
Ellis was recognized as an educator and innovator in maxillofacial trauma procedures and orthognathic surgery. Throughout his career as an academic surgeon, he has trained more than 200 residents. He served as residency director for 22 years at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center/Parkland Hospital in Dallas and has chaired the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the School of Dentistry for more than 15 years.
In addition to his leadership roles, Ellis has served on multiple AAOMS committees and is a past president of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been elected to the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. His scholarly contributions include more than 250 scientific articles, 72 book chapters and four coauthored textbooks.
His many honors include the 2012 AAOMS Donald B. Osbon Award for Outstanding Educator, the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation’s 1997 Research Recognition Award, the 2004 William Gies Foundation Award, the 2015 AAOMS Clinical Research Award and three Daniel Laskin Awards for best manuscript published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
This prestigious award recognizes his decades of contributions to oral and maxillofacial surgery and his role in advancing education, research and clinical practice within the School of Dentistry.
