Celebrating Dr. Adriana Segura’s retirement and legacy

The School of Dentistry at UT Health San Antonio is proud to honor Adriana Segura, DDS, MS, on her retirement on March 1, 2025, from her role as senior associate dean for academic, faculty and student affairs. Dr. Segura has been an integral part of the institution for over 25 years, shaping the future of dentistry through her dedication to students, faculty, patients and academic excellence.

Dr. Segura joined the School of Dentistry in 1999 and has since held numerous leadership positions. She began as the predoctoral director of the Pediatric Dentistry Program, a role she held until 2005. She also served as the interim chair for the Department of Community Dentistry and the director of the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic at the Ricardo Salinas Health Center for three years. In 2009, Dr. Segura became the associate dean for student affairs for the School of Dentistry until 2017 and was then appointed associate dean for academic, faculty and student affairs in January 2019. She was named interim dean for the School of Dentistry from June 1, 2018, to February 1, 2019, and in November of 2019, she was appointed interim chair for the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry. In 2023, Dr. Segura became senior associate dean of academics, faculty and student affairs. Her leadership and commitment have left an indelible mark on our school and community.

A retirement reception was held on February 28 at the Holly Auditorium, where faculty, staff, students, alumni, retired colleagues and her family gathered to celebrate her remarkable career. Dean Peter M. Loomer, DDS, PhD, MBA, reflected on her many accomplishments, highlighting her commitment to student success, clinical excellence and faculty development. He also recognized her deep connection to the Pediatric Dental Clinic at the Ricardo Salinas Health Center where she has cared for patients with passion and dedication.

During her speech, Dr. Segura expressed gratitude for her time at UT Health San Antonio, sharing that her career in academia has been one of the greatest joys of her life. She spoke candidly about the mixed emotions of retiring—sad to leave her work family, excited for new opportunities and a little scared of the unknown. She acknowledged the inspiration and work ethic instilled by her parents, the unwavering support of her husband, children and colleagues, and the many friendships she has built over the years.

Though stepping away from her current role, Dr. Segura has plans to continue contributing to the dental community through special projects. She assured everyone that this is not goodbye, just the beginning of a new chapter, and she looks forward to staying connected.

As we celebrate Dr. Segura’s legacy and contributions to UT Health San Antonio and the School of Dentistry, we extend our deepest gratitude for her years of service, mentorship and leadership.

We wish you the very best in your new adventures Dr. Segura!
