Tony Lin
M.D./Ph.D. Student
Tony Lin is a graduate student in the South Texas Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD Program) studying APOBEC mutagenesis under the mentorship of Reuben Harris, D.Phil. For his research, Tony is studying the post-translational regulation of a cytidine deaminase called APOBEC3B and its role in cancer mutagenesis. For his clinical specialty, Tony is considering pursuing pathology or radiology.
About Me
Born and raised in Taiwan. Lived in Vermont and California growing up. Got a BA in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley. Was told to pursue my dreams so started trying things out after college. Enrolled in Chabot College in Hayward, CA to compete in tennis at the collegiate level in hopes of going professional. Realized a year in that no one will ever pay to watch me play. Hung up my racquet (figuratively speaking since I still play) and moved on to a research gig in the Wiita lab at UCSF. Loved it and was getting paid so thought I was on the right track. Now back in school to pursue science and medicine.
Hobbies/Interests
Tennis, stand-up comedy, wrangling data
Research Topic
DNA-mutating enzymes in cancer, DNA damage response, multi-omics data integration
Why I chose MD/PhD
I see myself going into academic medicine in the future. My goal is to teach and conduct research in hopes of improving patient care and human health. Pursuing an MD/PhD is a small step toward that.
Why I chose MD/PhD at UT Health San Antonio
The unique interview process (i.e. chalk talk), supportive and transparent leadership, and a friendly student body stood out to me.
Post-bac work or other affiliations
