About the SciCom Showdown

The SciCom Showdown is a live, judged, bracket-style competition where GSBS graduate students represent their academic programs in head-to-head matchups. Participants are evaluated on clarity, accuracy, and engagement as they translate their research for non-expert audiences.

 

Why Science Communication Matters

Educational Goals:

  • Develop concise, accurate, and engaging science communication skills
  • Encourage interdisciplinary understanding across GSBS
  • Promote confidence in public and professional science discussions

Community Goals:

  • Strengthen cross-program collaboration and camaraderie
  • Showcase GSBS student talent to the broader university and community
  • Establish a signature GSBS tradition celebrating creativity in scientific outreach
  • Strengthen partnerships with Toastmasters

Competition Structure Overview:

  •  24 GSBS programs participate, with one representative per program
  • Programs select or nominate participants using program-defined processes
  • Competitors advance through preliminary rounds, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a grand finale
  • All presentations are judged using a standardized rubric modeled on Toastmasters International guidelines
