About the SciCom Showdown
The SciCom Showdown is a live, judged, bracket-style competition where GSBS graduate students represent their academic programs in head-to-head matchups. Participants are evaluated on clarity, accuracy, and engagement as they translate their research for non-expert audiences.
Why Science Communication Matters
Educational Goals:
- Develop concise, accurate, and engaging science communication skills
- Encourage interdisciplinary understanding across GSBS
- Promote confidence in public and professional science discussions
Community Goals:
- Strengthen cross-program collaboration and camaraderie
- Showcase GSBS student talent to the broader university and community
- Establish a signature GSBS tradition celebrating creativity in scientific outreach
- Strengthen partnerships with Toastmasters
Competition Structure Overview:
- 24 GSBS programs participate, with one representative per program
- Programs select or nominate participants using program-defined processes
- Competitors advance through preliminary rounds, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a grand finale
- All presentations are judged using a standardized rubric modeled on Toastmasters International guidelines
