The Center for Community-Based Health Promotion with Women and Children uses community-based participatory research (CBPR), a method to unite communities and academic researchers, to address community-identified needs through empowerment, establishing trust, fostering co-learning, and enhancing strengths to build community capacity. CBPR promotes equity and trust among marginalized and disenfranchised groups who historically had reason to mistrust health researchers.
Our center promotes interdisciplinary collaboration between academics, community members, and healthcare profession students to address health disparities associated with social, political, and economic issues such as poverty, inadequate housing, racism, and lack of access to health resources. Our Center provides CBPR mentoring and scholarship to faculty, students, and community members.
