Texas Physician Education Loan Repayment Program

Who It’s For: Primary care physicians who agree to practice for four consecutive years in a health professional shortage area or a secure correctional facility.

How to Apply: You can find the application on the program website, but only during the active enrollment period.

What Loans Qualify: Most loans (including federal, state, and private) should qualify, as long as they were used to pay for your higher education and can be verified with a legitimate promissory note. These loans may not have been taken out during your residency or to cover costs after the completion of medical school.

How Much?: Varies depending on the size of the loan, up to a possible maximum of $25,000 the first year, $35,000 the second, $45,000 the third, and $55,000 the fourth.

Anything Else I Should Know?: There is an alternate path to eligibility for this program. Even if you do not work in a qualifying health professional shortage area or correctional facility, you may still qualify if you provided services to a designated minimum number of Medicaid or Healthy Texas Women Program enrollees. See the “Alternative Path to Eligibility” section on the Physician Education Loan Repayment Program website for more details.
