New associate dean for research values the power of collaboration

The School of Health Professions welcomes its newly appointed Timothy A. Reistetter, Ph.D., OTR, FAOTA, Associate Dean for Research.
Previously appointed professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), where he served as director of the post-doctoral certificate program in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Reistetter also is a professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy.
Department of Occupational Therapy collects glove donations to help homeless
In an effort to help homeless people in the San Antonio Area, the Department of Occupational Therapy held a glove donation drive in late November and early December.
The effort yielded 194 pairs of donated gloves which were delivered to Heaven for Hope, the city's homeless center, said Kimatha Oxford Grice, OTD, OTR, CHT, associate professor. Grice said the drive was inspired by the comments of a speaker at the annual meeting of the Texas Society for Hand Therapy about the effect of cold weather on hands.
OT students join Frontera de Salud leadership team
Two occupational therapy students are on the 2019 leadership team for the UT Health San Antonio chapter of Frontera de Salud, a student-run volunteer organization that provides health care to underserved populations in Texas.
Janna Roberts is the School of Health Professions liaison and Brianna Reyna is the McAllen service coordinator.
OT student is first from UT Health San Antonio to receive TOTA student leader award
Like a number of her classmates, third-year occupational therapy master’s student Amy Honeck has accumulated an impressive list of volunteer service and leadership positions during her time in the program.
However, her recent selection to receive the Texas Occupational Therapy Association Student Leader Award is particularly notable.
“She is the first recipient from our university, so that is very exciting,” said Associate Professor Bridgett Piernik-Yoder, Ph.D., OTR, chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy.
PT faculty member gives presentation on the importance of research in allied health
Sandeep Subramanian, Ph.D., MS, BPT, physical therapy assistant professor highlighted the impact of rehabilitation research in the health professions during a presentation during National Allied Health Week.
Subramanian took a creative approach in his Nov. 8 Lunch & Learn presentation by describing the kinds of treatment a soldier injured in a blast would receive. Subramanian used the scenario to show how the soldier’s care would be informed by research from across departments within the School of Health Professions.
New OT clinical faculty is working to establish OT services for people with dementia and their caregivers at the Biggs Institute
New Department of Occupational Therapy clinical faculty member Laura Novak, OTR, is developing the new occupational therapy services program at the UT Health San Antonio Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Student receives top recognition by the Texas Occupational Therapy Association
Amy Honeck, a MOTIII student, was awarded the Student Leadership Award by the Texas Occupational Therapy Association (TOTA) at the Annual TOTA Mountain Central Conference held in Sugarland, Texas on November 2 – 4, 2018. Amy’s talents, leadership abilities, and tireless advocacy to promote the profession of occupational therapy was recognized through the highest distinction awarded by TOTA to occupational therapy students.
OT faculty presented on program's demographics at national educational summit
School of Health Professions faculty and administrators gave four presentations at the American Occupational Therapy Association OT Educational Summit held in Louisville, Kentucky, on October 13-14.
One presentation shared the demographics of the School’s OT program as part of a cluster of presentations on the recruitment and retention of students.

Don't miss National Allied Health Week Nov. 4-10
It’s that time again. The health professions will be front and center the week of Nov. 5 to celebrate Allied Health Week.
“Every year we have an opportunity for the School of Health Professions to shine a light on all of our different programs,” said one of the week’s event organizers, Carlos Herrera, president of the Master’s in Occupational Therapy Class of 2019.

More than 70 students gathered last month to learn for a first-year student interprofessional orientation—the first of its kind for the University.
Anastacia Flores, a graduate student in the nurse practitioner program in the School of Nursing, said she understands the need to connect and collaborate with other health professionals. She valued the opportunity to meet students from other programs.

One day in his future career as a medical laboratory scientist, Prit Desai hopes to collaborate with health professionals in other fields to exchange information and insights with the common goal of delivering excellent patient care.
School of Health Professions moves into a new space
The School of Health Professions moved into its new space in August, bringing the Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology programs into one building on the Long (Main) Campus.
The move was at least four years in the planning stages, said Dean David Shelledy, Ph.D., RRT, FAARC, FASAHP, Dean of the School of Health Professions. Each program had the opportunity to design teaching labs and facilities to best fit the needs of their profession, he said. Feedback has been favorable.
New LibGuide on Conducting a Literature Review and More

Briscoe Library continuously strives to acquire or create resources that can contribute to the success of UT Health San Antonio students, faculty, and staff. The Conducting a Literature Review LibGuide is a new subject guide that can be found among many others at libguides.uthscsa.edu. The Hub LibGuide is also new and provides instructions for using the library’s virtual reality and other software. The library is always open to ideas from the campus community regarding new LibGuides and other resources.
OT student receive ASAHP scholarship
Third-year Occupational Therapy student Abby Morales is one of 12 students selected nationally to receive a scholarship from the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions.
When Morales learned she had received the $1,000 award, she immediately reflected on her faith.
"I try to look at things positively and know that God's going to take care of me with school and student loans," she said.
School of Nursing alumna establishes endowment at School of Health Professions
An alumna of the School of Nursing has established an endowment that will support leadership efforts by School of Health Professions faculty in the area of rehabilitation.
Debbie Oveland, BSN, MSN, and a board-certified family nurse practitioner, signed the agreement in June to establish the Oveland Family Leadership Endowment Fund in Rehabilitation and Research.
Professor teaches Occupational Therapy students how to clown
Face painting, puppetry, balloon making and skits are all part of the curriculum in the Clowning 101 class Kimatha Oxford Grice, OTD, OTR, CHT, associate professor teaches.
Grice created the course for interested Occupational Therapy students. Make no mistake—this is one class not found in the official course catalog. Rather, it’s something Grice offers because she loves clowning and firmly believes occupational therapists are great at it. “It’s addicting, once you start doing it,” Grice said.
April proves to be a busy month for Occupational Therapy
The department of Occupational Therapy had a full schedule of events in April for OT Month.
Students from both occupational therapy classes participated in the Methodist Hospital OT Fair on April 12, where they helped educate more than 150 people on the profession.
"It was the perfect way to promote occupational therapy to the community as part of OT Month," said Bridgette Piernik-Yoder, Ph.D., OTR, associate professor and chair of the department.
