Communication sciences and disorders professor receives Spectrum Award

School of Health Professions Dean David Shelledy and Assistant Professor Rocio Norman post with Spectrum Award Norman received.

Communication Sciences and Disorders Assistant Professor Rocio Norman, PhD, CCC-SLP, received the 2023 School of Health Professions Spectrum Award.

The annual Spectrum Award recognizes one faculty member for all-around excellence and exceptional contributions in teaching, research and service. Receiving the award has confirmed her journey as a researcher and educator, Norman said.

“As an early-career researcher it reassures me that I am on the right path as a researcher, educator and member of the university and professional community,” Norman said. “Beyond my own accomplishments, the Spectrum is special to me because it symbolizes the support I have received at SHP since starting my position in 2017. This campus is my first ‘academic home’ as a faculty member, and I truly appreciate how much UT Health San Antonio has promoted and championed my goals.”

Norman’s research, which includes communication and cognitive disorders related to traumatic brain injury, will make a difference in the field and in the future of the profession, said School of Health Professions Dean David Shelledy, PhD, RRT, RPFT, FAARC, FASAHP.

“Dr. Norman’s impressive research activity demonstrates the impact faculty can have on scholarship and on the next generation of speech-language pathologists,” Shelledy said.
