Helping Children Manage School Stress

Occupational therapists help people of all ages engage in their daily activities — and for children, school is a major part of daily life.

Assistant Professor Mei-Ling Lin, PhD, OTR, has researched the effectiveness of self-regulation strategies on school children experiencing stress and anxiety. She has identified strategies that helped children calm themselves. These strategies include:

  • Deep-breathing exercises
  • Yoga
  • Coloring, particularly mandala patterns, which promote focus on detail and allow children to be in control of their own process
