How do I strengthen my application?
- We evaluate the entire application, not just the GPA. Consider, in your non-academic time, including community service and activities that demonstrate a commitment to your program of study.
- Get hands-on health care experience: volunteer, observe or shadow health professionals to learn more about the profession and develop a concept of how they practice. A variety of observation or shadowing hours is more important than the number of hours. For example, an applicant with 100 hours of observation in a variety of settings may be stronger than an applicant who has 400 hours at one clinic.
- Plan accordingly for your academic goal-setting with your GPA, grades and earn high marks in all college coursework. If possible, have two different health professionals in your field of interest write your recommendation letters (if appropriate).
- Review our website and become familiar with the program to which you are hoping to apply.
- Be able to tell us how you would be a good match for our program. Learn a second language; if you already know a second language, improve your language skills. Consider learning Spanish medical terms.
What characteristics would make me a competitive candidate for admission?
We look for well-rounded individuals. A history of academic success, service to the community, shadowing or observation hours, strong motivation to be a health professional, letters of reference, excellent critical thinking skills, written skills and interpersonal skills are examples of characteristics that we look for in applicants.
Why is a criminal background check required?
- Our students get practical experience in clinical spaces that require background checks. Those who are unable to pass a background check may not be able to enter clinical spaces.
- Criminal background checks are done after an applicant has been selected after his or her interview for an initial offer to the program. Please note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the national certification examination or to attain state licensure. You may contact the national board and state licensure board for further information about this.
Where can I get more tips on applying?
- We hold Open House Workshops periodically throughout the year. During the workshop you will meet the faculty, current students and admissions team members. We review the application and admission procedures, give tips on applying and recommendations to strength your application.
- To attend a workshop, you must RSVP in advance. The event is free and recommended for prospective applicants who are within two years of applying.
- Please note that the admission requirements are reviewed annually and are subject to change. We recommend annual attendance at an Open House Workshop for the latest updates.
