Project Profile

Solar Lighting at Courtyard and Gazebo

Solar light panels have been installed at the newly renovated courtyard by the Nursing School building and the gazebo located near the running/walking track to enhance illumination at night and for nighttime events. Solar energy is cost effective as its source of power is the sun, for which the sun in Texas constantly shines bright. There is little maintenance to the lighting once it has been installed. The solar lighting kits contain darkness sensors which automatically turn the lights on and off by means of light sensitivity.

Depending on the amount of sunlight, the lights at the gazebo will last between six to eight hours. The Courtyard lights, equipped with larger panels and a more powerful battery, can almost stay on all night long. The Courtyard did not have any lighting before the renovation, so having these lights has become a plus. "These lights are 100% solar powered and they do not have any additional power source," says Santos Paniagua, Facilities Management Construction Estimator. "They were used to incorporate a renewable energy source in our design."

The solar panel powers two lights that effectively illuminate the courtyard at   night.

Facilities Management craftsmen make modifications to the gazebo roof to install   the solar panel.
