Community Outreach

Scientific Outreach

One of the ways that we help our community is by participating at local science festivals. Our students routinely serve as judges at
The John Jay Science & Engineering Academy Science and Engineering Fair and the Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair (ARSEF). The Voelker Biomedical Research Academy provides opportunities for graduate students to serve as mentors, instructors, and supports for high school students interested in pursuing a career in the sciences.

Science outreach is a passion of ours and we are frequent participators in the Girls Inc. Science Festival, and most recently the
CORE-4 STEM program through the Hispanic Chamber o fCommerce, which supported over 2,000 elementary and middle school students throughout the San Antonio area.

Please contact Amanda Ramirez, Assistant Director of Student Success, for questions regarding our science-based volunteer events.

San Antonio Outreach

Viva Science SA is an annual, free and family-friendly event that features a distinguished speaker, interactive science booths with fun activities for all ages, a science fair with posters by local scientists, science-themed artwork, delicious food trucks and much more. This event is organized by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UT Health San Antonio and graduate student leaders with the support of all schools at UT Health San Antonio and our partners in the community. Viva Science SA is designed to enlighten, engage, and excite people of all ages in the San Antonio community by displaying science in an entertaining fashion.

In addition to science outreach, the graduate school also participates in non-scientific outreach like when we volunteered and sorted boxes at the Food Bank or when we helped to build homes with
Habitat For Humanity.

For questions regarding our San Antonio outreach initiatives, please contact Marcus Webster at

UTHSA Outreach

The Office of Recruitment and Science Outreach supports interprofessional community outreach program at UT Health San Antonio and provides a platform for dental, graduate, health professions, medical and nursing students to interact and collaboratively design and present science programming. Students have the ability to provide campus/lab tours, serve as health science mentors, create instruction labs, and more.

Students can also utilize the institution ENGAGED platform for additional opportunities for interprofessional outreach.
