:::OUR MISSION

The goal of the Diabetes Prevention Team is to educate at risk populations about Type 2 Diabetes, its associated risk factors, and the various strategies individuals can implement to lower their risk of acquiring the disease. The Diabetes Prevention Team has developed a community presentation which defines diabetes, lists the risk factors for developing diabetes, describes the warning signs of diabetes, and provides preventive measures individuals can take to decrease their risks of developing diabetes. Additionally, the team developed a series of newsletters covering topics relevant to diabetes prevention such as increasing exercise, increasing fiber intake, and lowering fat intake.

Our research indicates that the number of Type 2 Diabetes cases among children is rising and that greater efforts must be made in preventing diabetes in those deemed most at risk – namely Hispanic children from low income households.

By targeting low–income households that are disproportionately affected by diabetes, we increase awareness about prevention. By providing parents with the tools – namely education and information – to prevent diabetes from occurring in their children, we begin the process of decreasing the number of children diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the future.
