Obesity in San Antonio:
... background for this project

San Antonio is ranked among the fattest cities in the United States. We, as students and fellow members of the San Antonio community can, help remedy this overweight problem by starting "Muevelo San Antonio!" Our program emulates a similar campaign that was successfully conducted in Brooklyn, called "Lighten up Brooklyn." The 5,921 participants lost a collective weight of 82,655 pounds over the 8-week period.

Overweight and obesity are major contributors to many preventable causes of death. On average, higher body weights are associated with higher death rates. The number of overweight children, adolescents, and adults has risen over the past four decades.

Working directly with the community partners will help to increase the impact this project has on the community. It is imperative that we reach the community, because obesity related health cost is a community matter. The millions of dollars spent on obesity related illnesses can be better spent for more preventive health care issues. Diabetes is a disease in particular that plaques South Texas and has a strong link to obesity. In 2001, 73,000 of Bexar counties residents were know diabetics. With a population of over one million people, that is a prevalence of 7.5%. Our eff will have an enormous effect of reducing the medical cost related to this disease alone.

spacer image Education is the key component of "Muevelo San Antonio", and it will be the focus through out the six weeks. Obesity substantially raises the risk of illness from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, gallbladder disease, arthritis, sleep disturbances and problems breathing, and certain types of cancer. Obese individuals also may suffer from social stigmatization, discrimination, and lowered self-esteem.

Controlling obesity is a lifetime commitment, and with the help of our community partners we can empower people through education to loose weight and maintain the weight loss. We, as members of this community, will lead the way in cutting health care expenditures for San Antonio and its surrounding communities, allowing more funding for preventive medicine, health care availability, better health insurance coverage, and medical research. All of these health care issues have a direct effect on family and general medicine, which is where 38% of PAs practiced in 2001.
