Based on the positive feedback we received from this year’s program, we have decided to extend the theme of developing effective teaching strategies by devoting our next conference to “Creating Significant Learning Experiences” based on the popular text by L. Dee Fink, PhD. Dr. Fink believes in and expands on Bloom’s taxonomies by addressing skill acquisition specific for the learner in higher education. Dee Fink, PhD, has developed a program that provides the educator a step-by-step guide for revamping course design and materials and essentially incorporating significant learning experiences that enhance student learning. Many of the well recognized leaders in adult education have applauded Dr. Fink’s taxonomy of significant learning. At the end of the 2-day workshop, the dental hygiene educator attending this course will recreate a clinical or didactically based-course (attendee choice) based on the taxonomy of significant learning.

The Joy and Responsibility of Teaching Well
L. Dee Fink, PhD
When we teach, our actions as teachers have the potential not only to fulfill our responsibility to students and society but also to give us the deep joy that comes when we do something important, well. There is growing evidence that although college-level teaching is extremely important in today’s world, we are not doing a very good job of educating our students. In this presentation, we will examine our traditional responses and suggest alternative responses - to four central issues of teaching: WHAT we teach, HOW we teach, how we GEAR UP as teachers, and WHO we are as educators. If we can re-think and revise our responses to these four issues in ways that improve student learning, we can experience the deep Joy that comes with doing something very important – WELL!
| BREAK | 10:30 – 10:45 AM |
| CREATING SIGNIFICANT LEARNING EXPERIENCES | 10:45 – 04:00 PM |
This hands-on workshop will provide the learner/educator conceptual and procedural tools for designing instruction. For the remainder of the workshop, participants will learn how to systemically combine foundational educational principles (active learning, educative assessment) with the taxonomy of significant learning. During the workshop, the educator/learner will actively participate in using these ideas to design or redesign their courses so that their students will have learning experiences that take into account five phases of course design: situational factors, learning goals, feedback and assessment, teaching/learning activities, and careful integration. Working with a specific course, participants will frame learning goals, incorporate evaluation and assessment, and formulate powerful, active teaching strategies.
| LUNCH | 12:00 – 12:50 PM |
| BEST PRACTICES IN SIGNIFICANT LEARNING & MARKETPLACE RECEPTION | 04:00 – 05:00 PM |
Whether you are familiar with Dr. Fink’s work or not, consider sharing your best practice in creating significant learning experiences for students with your colleagues.
