Dental Auxiliary Nitrous Oxide Certification Course

 

Course Description

Dental hygienists and dental assistants, who are not currently certified to monitor nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation conscious sedation, must now attend an approved certification course that includes an examination component. In accordance with Rule 114.4, this course has been approved by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE). Upon registration for the course, participants will receive a packet of study materials.

 

This 8 hour course will include the following topics in a classroom and laboratory setting:

  1. Brief history of Nitrous Oxide-Oxygen Conscious Sedation (NO-OCS)
  2. The legal provisions (Texas Jurisprudence) for Dental Auxiliaries to monitor NO-OCS
  3. Dental anatomy and physiology related to NO-OCS
  4. Common drugs that react to the exposure of NO-OCS
  5. The operation of equipment used to monitor Nitrous Oxide, as well as the safety features and infection control of equipment
  6. Responsibilities in monitoring patients under NO-OCS
  7. Recognition and management of medical emergencies associated with Nitrous Oxide

To engage the participants’ learning, innovative teaching techniques will be used such as interactive games and audience response systems.

Examination Criteria

  • Participants must pass a written examination with a 70%
  • Remediation and re-testing is available on a case-by-case basis
  • Participants may retake the examination up to 2 times ($10 each exam). If the participant does not successfully pass after the 3rd try, the course must be retaken.

Course Presenter

Mary Jacks, R.D.H, M.S., is an Assistant Professor in the Dental Hygiene Department at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Ms Jacks has over 25 year’s clinical experience and has been full-time faculty member since 2000. Areas of teaching expertise include: Periodontics, pain management techniques including the use of Nitrous Oxide, faculty calibration, humor in healthcare, and distance education technologies. She has provided numerous national and international lectures on micro ultrasonic instrumentation and adapting techniques to efficiently manage periodontal clients. Ms Jacks was the 2007 recipient of the UT Health Science Center Presidential Teaching Excellence award.
