The Department of Dental Hygiene offers a Bachelor of Science Degree Program that prepares graduates for licensure and entry into the profession. The program consists of two academic years of upper-level course­work in dental hygiene theory, laboratory, and clinical skills. Applicants must complete specific general edu­cation prerequisite courses before entering the dental hygiene major. The Bachelor’s program requires students to successfully complete a total of 123 semester hours to earn the degree (includes Texas Core, prerequisites, and dental hygiene major courses). Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take dental hygiene licensing examinations for eligibility to practice. The Department of Dental Hygiene is administered under the School of Health Professions.

What degree will I receive upon completion of the program?

Students who successfully complete the program receive a Bachelor of Science Degree.

 

When is the application deadline?

The completed application packet, including transcripts from courses taken the previous fall semester, must be received by the registrar's office by the close of business January 15th (or the next business day if the 15th falls on a weekend).


When and how many students will be admitted to the program each year?
Thirty students are admitted into the Bachelor of Science entry program once a year in the fall semester.


Is the ACT, SAT or any other aptitude examinations required for entry or admissions?
No specific aptitude tests are required to be completed to apply to the Dental Hygiene program.

 

How academically demanding is the program and may I work while attending school?
The dental hygiene program is academically challenging and requires ample time in order to be successful. Students are discouraged from working due to the rigors of studying and attending classes. For financial aid and scholarship information, please contact the Financial Aid office.

 

How many days should I expect to attend classes and clinics?
Classes and clinics are scheduled Monday-Thursday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Classes may also be held on occasional Fridays during the semesters.
