More than 350 turned out this past fall for the 17th annual Vulcan Funshoot, which this year raised $111,000 in net proceeds for the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at the
UT Health Science Center San Antonio.
Held on the rolling hillsides of the National Shooting Complex just west of Loop 1604, the sporting clay fundraiser has been a labor of love since 1994 for the employees and leaders of the materials company and has raised more than $1.6 million over the years.
“We’ve all been touched by someone with cancer,” said Tom Ransdell, past president of Vulcan and a member of the CTRC’s Board of Governors and foundation board.
Tom McFadden, business solutions analyst for the Vulcan Materials Company, agrees. McFadden was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in January 2004 and immediately began treatment at the CTRC.
“I was cured and cancer free by the summer of 2004,” McFadden said. “San Antonio is very fortunate to have access to the highest quality of treatment and care available through the CTRC. Being able to continue my life has been wonderful, and I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the treatment I received. The Funshoot is a way my Vulcan colleagues and I can give back to an organization that is saving lives.”.
