The University Transplant Center, a partnership between the Health Science Center and University Hospital, provides the most state-of-the-art transplant care and the most exceptional clinical team in the region. Since the inception of this multi-organ transplant program in 1985, nearly 2,300 organ transplants have been successfully performed. The program celebrated its 1,000th liver transplant surgery in 2007, ranking the program among the largest in the nation. This year, the program marked its 300th lung transplant. The one-year liver transplant survival rate at the center is more than 87 percent.

Glenn Halff, M.D., professor of surgery, is director of the University Transplant Center. In 1992 he initiated the liver transplant program at the Health Science Center, where he performs adult and pediatric liver and kidney transplants. Along with Dr. Francisco G. Cigarroa, he performed the first split-liver transplant in South Texas.
