Presidential Teaching Excellence Award
The Presidential Teaching Excellence Award is presented to outstanding full-time faculty members who exhibit the finest principles in education.
They possess extensive knowledge of their subject material, maintain an awareness of current developments, and incorporate examples from recent literature or clinical experience in the classroom. These faculty members have distinguished themselves not only through teaching methods in the classroom but also by serving as role models and mentors to students outside class. They have made a significant contribution to the education and development of future health care professionals.

Robert Esterl, Jr., MD

Dr. Robert Esterl never misses a teachable moment. According to his students and colleagues, life serves as his classroom.
A talented transplant surgeon, Dr. Esterl teaches not only in the classroom but also in the operating room, during morning rounds, in the elevator, in his office, on the transplant jet, and, occasionally, at his favorite Thai restaurant.
Dr. Robert Esterl is director of medical student education for the department of surgery, and his colleagues say that he has truly nurtured education within the department. He simultaneously advocates for students and inspires them to excellence.

John C. King, MD

Rehabilitation Medicine
Described as a forwardthinker, master teacher and indefatigable clinician, Dr. John King is committed to providing meaningful and positive educational experiences for students, residents and colleagues.
Dr. King is known for his innovative teaching strategies, such as the Mr. X Conferences, which provide a relaxed atmosphere in which students discuss and manage a hypothetical patient. Students have described this as an invaluable learning experience.
Colleagues praise Dr. Kings leadership in collaborative interdisciplinary teaching. Currently a professor of rehabilitation medicine, Dr. King joined the Health Science Center faculty in 1987.

Linda Y. Johnson, PhD
Associate Professor
Cellular and Structural Biology
Dr. Linda Johnson describes anatomy as the language of medicine. An anatomy expert, Dr. Johnson teaches this language to medical students, graduate students and physician assistant students.
Students describe her anatomy class as an exciting and unforgettable experience that they can directly apply to their clinical interests. They also say that Dr. Johnsons class has taught them not only anatomy, but also discipline, teamwork, communication skills and professionalism.
Dr. Johnson, who has been teaching at the Health Science Center since 1974, also received the Teaching Excellence Award in 1985 and 1994. She is the first faculty member to be honored with this distinction three times.

Known for her patience, kindness and dedication, Dr. Elizabeth Reifsnider serves as an associate professor in the department of chronic nursing care.
Her expertise lies in the areas of maternal, child and community public health, and she possesses an incredible desire to inspire others to share her enthusiasm for this area.
Dr. Reifsniders colleagues praise her ability to link research and practice. Her students say that she serves as a wonderful mentor, always encouraging, enlightening and inspiring them to reach out to others.

As a teacher, Laurie Singel truly lives by her motto, Knowledge is not ours to keep. She believes that her duty is to break down complex information and share it with her students, and she instills in them the desire to pass this information along to others.
Ms. Singel possesses an extraordinary excitement and enthusiasm. Her students praise her positive, encouraging attitude. She is also known for her innovative teaching methods.
From coordinating new courses to evaluating curriculum to arranging special review sessions for her students, Assistant Professor Laurie Singel is making a difference in the School of Nursing.

Juanita Wallace, PhD

Dental Hygiene
Dr. Juanita Wallace calls herself a lifelong learner. Even though she has been teaching at the Health Science Center for 25 years, she still pays close attention to what her students can teach her.
Associate professor and chair of the department of dental hygiene, Dr. Wallace demonstrates not only a broad and thorough understanding of dental hygiene; she is also an expert in the areas of education and leadership.
Dr. Wallace says she practices Steven Coveys principle, Seek first to understand, then to be understood. She has an excellent rapport with her students, who praise her abilities to engage an audience and appeal to a variety of learners.
