Presidential Employee Excellence in Service Award

The Presidential Employee Excellence in Service Award honors Health Science Center employees who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the University. These individuals regularly and consistently exceed expectations.

Their overall performance reflects a high level of service, trustworthiness and respect. By developing new processes or improving existing processes, these individuals have significantly improved productivity and cost savings for the University.

Health Science Center news has entered the wave of the future, thanks to Natalie Gutierrez. Natalie led the effort to digitize the HSC News. By transitioning the university newsletter from print to online, Natalie saved thousands of dollars and increased worldwide exposure for our news and achievements.

As former editor of our internal newsletter, Natalie ensured that all employees received important news in a timely and efficient manner. Natalie recently took the reins of the Health Science Center’s award-winning Mission magazine. Natalie also works with the media to communicate our success stories to the outside world.

Natalie’s writing has garnered national and international awards. Her colleagues praise not only her skill, but also her dedication, perseverance and optimism.

Gerard Long is one of those unique, talented individuals who make the Health Science Center a better place, according to his colleagues.

His knowledge of grants management programs, federal regulations, financial management and institutional policies are beyond compare. Jerry has been instrumental in making the Health Science Center a leader in the PeopleSoft grants community. His efforts have also helped to boost the prominence of the Health Science Center within the higher education research community.

Jerry’s technical skill and expertise are complemented by an incredible drive and a selfless willingness to help others. He is innovative, attentive to detail and always positive.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

Andréa Longoria is helping create a safer, healthier future for thousands of women and adolescents.

For the past eight years, Andréa has worked for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology with the Project SAFE/AVANTE Clinic.

Andréa was integral in the development, recruitment and subsequent success of a research project designed to reduce behavioral risk factors in minority women with sexually transmitted diseases.

In addition, Andréa facilitates workshops to educate and empower women and adolescents. Andréa has created an open, non-threatening classroom environment where students learn about self-image, self-esteem, drug abuse, anger, depression, sexually transmitted diseases and resisting peer pressure.

Corinne Price possesses an infectious optimism. Her colleagues describe her as skilled, creative and incredibly loyal.

It is not unusual for Corinne to work nights and weekends to get the job done, and despite her long hours, she always wears a smile.

As Editor II for the Barshop Center, Corinne has developed, designed and produced a number of informational and promotional materials, including the SAge newsletter.

Corinne’s efforts have significantly promoted the Barshop Center’s important research to the scientific and lay communities in and beyond San Antonio. Over the past three years, Corinne has played an important role in the Barshop Center’s development activities, which have raised more than $12 million.

David Rupert is an outstanding nurse with a clear commitment to clinical care. But his service to the Health Science Center does not stop there.

He is also an information technology expert and coordinator for both the diabetes in youth study and the day camp for children with diabetes.

David consistently goes the extra mile. He takes a forward-thinking, solution-oriented approach to clinical and administrative problems. His colleagues praise his diligence and congeniality and rank him as one of the top pediatric nurses in the nation.

This enthusiastic, skilled professional is impacting the lives of children throughout the San Antonio community.
