Presidential Clinical Excellence Award

The Presidential Clinical Excellence Award honors full-time faculty of the Health Science Center who provide clinical services as part of their appointments. These clinicians have distinguished themselves through exemplary and sustained expertise, and they represent the very finest in quality patient care. By building relationships with patients, family members, professional colleagues, residents, students and staff, these awardees demonstrate collaborative teamwork, independent leadership and compassionate care.

Dr. John H. Calhoon has been called “an artist in the operating room.” Colleagues and patients praise his skillful hands, sharp mind and warm heart.

A cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Calhoon performed the first successful infant heart transplant in South Texas. In 1993, Dr. Calhoon and the surgical team corrected a defective aortic valve in a two-day-old boy – truly a national medical breakthrough.

A leader and an innovator, Dr. Calhoon has significantly advanced the cause of cardiac surgery in South Texas. But Dr. Calhoon also exhibits an extraordinary compassion. Colleagues and students say Dr. Calhoon truly practices both the art and the heart of medicine.

Dr. Natalie Callander is known for her extraordinary knowledge, passion and vision. She serves as an associate professor and director of the University Hospital Bone Marrow Transplant Program.

Dr. Callander truly goes above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that every patient receives the best medical care possible. Residents admire her commitment to very high standards of care and look to her as a role model.

Colleagues call Dr. Callander innovative and enthusiastic. She is a strong patient advocate and shows remarkable compassion in her dealings with patients, families and staff.

As an exceptional trauma critical care surgeon, Dr. Ronald Stewart is dedicated to helping others. He is known not only for his technical skill, but also for his dedication to his patients and their families.

As an associate professor and director of trauma and emergency surgery, Dr. Stewart is advancing local trauma care, and is actively advocating for increased funding for trauma centers across Texas.

One of his patients said, “Dr. Stewart is one of the finest doctors – and one of the finest men – I could hope to know.”
